Gillo Pontecorvo’s 1966 film paints a stark and bleeding image of French colonial brutality and hypocrisy in occupied Algeria. Following the mirrored characters of French paratrooper commander Colonel Mathieu, a former French Resistance fighter during World War II, and leader of the Algerian Front de Libération Nationale, Ali la Pointe, Pontecorvo elucidates what happens when the occupying and occupied inhabitants of a settler-colony are pushed to their breaking points.

Concerning Violence (2014) is an archive-driven documentary directed by Göran Hugo Olsson that explores the 1960s/70s African liberation movements through the lens of Frantz Fanon’s The Wretched of the Earth. Narrated by Lauryn Hill, it argues that colonial power is maintained by violence and can only be undone through armed resistance.
